North Canterbury · Waimakariri District

Building decks across North Canterbury.

North Canterbury, for us, means the Waimakariri district - Rangiora and Kaiapoi as the two main towns, plus Woodend, Pegasus, Ravenswood, Ohoka and Cust around them. It's a separate district from Christchurch City, with its own council, sitting directly north of our Redwood base up the main north road. We don't treat it as a special trip - it's a normal part of our week.

The district is genuinely one of the fastest-growing in Canterbury. Waimakariri's population has passed 69,000 and is projected to reach around 77,000 by 2033, and the council has opened up more than 330 hectares of new residential land across Rangiora and Kaiapoi to keep up with people moving out from Christchurch. That growth shows up as two different kinds of build for us - established sections in the older parts of Rangiora and Kaiapoi with real garden space to work with, and new-subdivision sections on the growth edges of both towns where the deck has to be designed tightly around a smaller, freshly formed section.

Built to the section, not a template

The right deck for your North Canterbury section

An established North Canterbury section and a new-subdivision section need different decks, not just different quotes. Here's how the two usually break down.

Elevated entertaining decks

Established sections across the district usually have the garden space for a raised entertaining deck - integrated steps, run the full width of the house, no subdivision covenant dictating the footprint.

Low-level, tight-footprint decks

Newer subdivision sections on the district's growth edges are smaller and freshly formed. We design a lower-level deck tightly around the actual footprint, rather than fitting an oversized layout onto a section that can't take it.

Material choice follows the same logic. Kwila suits an established garden that's going to be lived in for decades. Composite suits a new-build owner who wants a deck that's ready to use without an oiling routine to start. Full material comparison is on the deck building page.

How it works

How we run a North Canterbury build.

Free on-site visit, written quote, materials from the sawmill, build on the tools and a full site clean at handover. North Canterbury sits outside Christchurch city but well within our travel range - the process doesn't change because the address does. Full process detail is on the deck building page.

How we build every deck →

Common questions

Questions from North Canterbury homeowners.

Straight answers to the questions North Canterbury homeowners ask most. If yours isn't here, call us on 021 028 24072.

Do you actually build in North Canterbury, or is it too far from your base?

Yes - it's a normal part of our run, not a special trip. We're based in Redwood, and Rangiora and Kaiapoi are both a straightforward drive up the main north road. We quote and build across the district the same way we do anywhere else in Canterbury.

Which North Canterbury towns do you actually cover?

Rangiora and Kaiapoi are our main towns in the district, and we also build in Woodend, Pegasus, Ravenswood, Ohoka and Cust. If you're not sure whether your street is in range, ask us when you call - it's a quick answer.

Do you deal with Waimakariri District Council, or only Christchurch City Council?

Waimakariri is a separate council from Christchurch City, and we work under both. Consent requirements are handled the same way project to project - it's part of the quote, not an extra step you have to chase yourself.

Does it matter if I'm in an established part of town or a new subdivision?

It changes the design, not the standard. Newer subdivision sections around Rangiora and Kaiapoi's growth areas run smaller than the established streets near each town centre, so we design the deck to make the most of the footprint rather than fitting an oversized layout onto it. Same materials, same guarantee, either way.

How long does a North Canterbury deck build take?

Most residential decks run two to four weeks on-site once materials arrive. A larger build, or a deck and fence together, usually runs four to six weeks. We confirm the timeline once we've seen the section.
